I’m usually too busy being vitiated by envy to feel anything but tepid dislike for the MacArthur Fellows, but in this year’s crop for some reason instead I see every reason to be grateful, and to hope that H. sapiens might even at some point be spared ourselves, thanks to the labors of their kind. They seem humane and reasonable and compassionate, these dual-rôled awardees: composers and country doctors (with their eminent moustaches), naturalist-illustrators and surgeon-authors, social psychologists and narrative journalists; may they do good work and keep in touch.
