overheard at health & human services: revisionist history lesson
Wednesday 31 January 2007 | I like a cookie
Little Girl [about four years old, standing in front of gumball machine, outraged]: Look what happened!
Girl’s Dad: What?
Girl: I wanted that one!
Dad [shrugs]: You don’t get your pick.
Girl: But this isn’t the one I wanted!
Dad: Well, they pick for you. You get what they give you.
[Dad walks away. A beat, then Girl follows.]
Girl [half-shouting, with determined merriment]: I got the one I wanted! I like this one! This is the one I picked!
