flipper’s dry wisdom on unsupportive comrades

Discouragement from friends is pretty hard to take. And it seems to leave only two reasonable interpretations, neither of which are pretty. Whatever the travails ahead, you are facing them together. (Regional chauvinism, bye the bye, is something oddly endemic these days. I can’t blame Santa Feans for looking on Phoenix as the last stop before hell. But perhaps there’s envy mixed in, since the stench of defeat is pervasive in every refuge of counter-culture. We have failed abysmally, and lacking any unified resistance, it’s hard to know what path, if any, is worth honoring.) Strange talk from a Marxist, but that’s how I see it. Otherwise you just have very unpleasant friends.
