finally, a sighting!
Sunday 30 September 2007 | I like a cookie
Yesterday the Brujo and I ran away from the suburbs to the rocks and saguaros of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. We ogled and photographed and gawped at many interesting cacti, it is true; but for me the high point of the whole morning came just as we were leaving, when we entered the succulent house and heard a young woman leaping about and screaming. What could it be, the Brujo inquired; A CREATURE! A CREATURE! she yelped, moving rapidly in the opposite direction; and sure enough, there was a satisfyingly enormous specimen of scolopendra heros, kind of convulsing on the sidewalk and looking none too healthy (poisoned, the Brujo figures) (massive 1.1. MB photo, with my brown Ked included for scale, behind the cut so as not to horrify the unwary). I bounced around squeaking with excitement for the next half-hour, chanting myriapodia! scolopendrae! arthropod! until the Brujo probably got tired of me. I really need to create a category for the many-leggeds because now I have great ambition to see more of them. Just preferably nowhere near my actual home.
