Daoly mosting, I mean, daily posting, will resume on Monday, after grades have been handed in and brains have been forcibly rearranged. It might even last the entire blessed five weeks (!) of vacation.
In avoidance of grading in the last few days, and in the Brujo’s absence (gig in SF), I crocheted a weird scarf, have been packing a box of cloth pads and knickers to go to Ghana, surreptitiously sneaked out of my office more than once to troll fabric stores, have obsessed about the fact that the Singer Featherweight will arrive from Mandarin’s mum on Thursday (!!) and found a nonexistent “free” hour to join a monthly fat quarter swap. My sadly predictable and culturally overdetermined preferences?
“minky, velvet, velour, bamboo, cotton, raw silk, silk, linen, flannel, wool, felt, yarn, toile, canvas, organic, hand-dyed, imperfect, slubs, cute, little, clean, fresh, pretty, simple, tiny, baby, girly, bright, soft, simple, romantic, rainbow, batik, purple, eggplant, aubergine, indigo, blue, crayon blue, apple green, sage, peacock, teal, aqua, turquoise, periwinkle, robin’s egg blue, sky blue, lavender, lilac, rose, red, coral, pumpkin, butter yellow, ivory, cream, taupe, chocolate brown, polka dots, seeds, stripes, circles, squares, hearts, floral, calico, vintage, shabby, gingham, kitschy, retro, repro, floursack, feedsack, civil war, atomic, eames, domestic, kitchen, housewife, thirties, forties, fifties, paisley, palazzo, florentine, pansies, violets, roses, irises, sakura, ume, chrysanthymums, asian, chinese, kanji, japan, japanese, sushi, paris, france, french, art deco, ballerinas, fairies, hello kitty, sanrio, amigurumi, zakka, geisha, kimono, kawaii, kokeshi, alexander henry, loteria, dia de los muertos, cabezas, tattoo, guadalupe, angels, cherubim, religious, snowflakes, celestial, zodiac, astrology, witches, halloween, skulls, moons, stars, suns, planets, dragons, unicorns, cats, bats, hedgehogs, mice, bunnies, sheep, seals, turtles, fish, butterflies, dragonflies, trees, houses, windows, baby prints, children’s prints, novelty, cherries, strawberries, apples, pears, veggies, white chocolate, vanilla, matcha, coffee, tea, cocoa, candy, sweets, pastries, cupcakes, alphabets, writing, language, script, typeface, scholar, newspaper, printing, letters, words, notecards, postcards, stationery, notebooks, blank books, handmade paper, marbled paper, typography, rubber stamps, stamp pads, gel pens, colored ink, thrift stores, recycled, resourced, repurposed, purses, zippy bags, wristlets, wristies, snap wallets, card holders, scarves, mini quilts, baby blankets, crafts, etsy, hyenacart, cloth pads, wetbags, lunette, mooncup, soap, hand cream, lip balm, lip balm, lip balm.”
It’s precisely this kind of thing which probably explains why I’m not a big important self-supporting rock-star blogger with cool margin ads and a book contract, n’est-ce pas….? Though I did somehow manage to 1) snag the junior English course for next year; 2) find a small publisher for Doe (and we mean small, as in 3×5 inches); and 3) earn an improbable A+ on my teacher training seminar paper, all 25 pedagogical-theoretical blundering pages of it. And, my coffee-induced ulcer seems to be in abeyance, thanks to copious doses of Prilosec! And, I haven’t murdered Pyewacket despite her dreadful yowling! And I wrote a dozen or so indifferent lyric poems, and I read and fell for García Márquez and Günther Grass and Borges and Clarice Lispector. And I haven’t cleaned the house in two weeks, and it bears a fine sheen of dog hair, and in the Brujo’s absence the sink is full of scary dishes and I stay up all night doing nothing. So I’ve not totally gone over to the bourgeois dark side, maybe—even if I do like cupcakes, sheep, and, um, lip balm.

1) Congratulations (want to see the reading list!) 2) Congratulations! And 3) Congratulations. And if you were a rock-star blogger and I had to be 49th (300th) in line to leave a comment I’d still love your blog but it’s kind of nice to know how discriminating your readers are, right?
