So first there was this pretty spool of batik string thread that was on sale for $3. Add one size N crochet hook, some muscle memory, and a three-hour catch-up phone call with Mandarin (!) and you have a lovely-looking (emphasis on looking) scarf. Adorably wonky! she said defensively.

The problem is…it’s not unlike bedding in Mexican hotel rooms, which the Brujo refers to as “special exfoliating sheets.” What we have ourselves here is an exfoliating scarf. It’s kind of like wearing burlap around your neck…or maybe a rag rug. The whole thing will have to be unraveled and seek a new identity as a pair of hotpads or some dish scrubbers.
The second attempt is going much better. Same needle, slightly different made-up pattern, $2 violet bouclé from Hancock—see what can happen when you actually crochet with YARN? Crazy talk! It’s only about three inches wide but I’m very fond of it.

And finally, I’ve been looking fruitlessly most of my life for really tiny notebooks, the kind poets need on buses and in the grocery store for our really tiny ideas. After trolling etsy.com and staring at other people’s handsewn fabric-covered $12 wonders, the light slowly dawned, as in, “the Ice Age slowly ended,” and I realized…I could…MAKE THEM MYSELF. With the eighteen SQUILLION pieces of paper I have floating around my desk and making it impossible for me to open the drawers. Et voilá: the matchbook notebook or “natchbook” as the Brujo calls them bemusedly. With 20 sheets of reclaimed/resourced paper apiece (salvaged from this semester’s student sign-up sheets). Now how much more crafty can you get?! (And guess what you’re all getting for Xmas this year….)

And now I’m going to try that going-to-bed-early-so-I-can-get-up-early-and-REALLY-get-stuff-done-tomorrow thing, only 1) it’s not early anymore, unless by early you mean early tomorrow morning already, and 2) it never works. But I am sick unto death of not-grading…though I am getting lots of other things done. Sort of.
